Bedtime Story Apps That Use Your Voice, Compared
October 18, 2026 · 9 min read

If you want an app to read bedtime stories to your child in your own voice, there is now a real choice. Taletune, Bedtime Whisper, Voice Hug, DreamStories, SleepyVoice and MamaTales all clone a parent's voice from a short recording, Mama's Voice does the same in a web browser, and Story Time AI does it on Android. They differ in where the stories come from, how many family members can add a voice, which languages they narrate in, and how you pay.
We make Taletune, so read this with that in mind. Every claim about another app below comes from that app's own website, store listing or privacy policy, checked on 18 October 2026, and where a listing does not say something, we say so rather than guess. We have left out star ratings and review counts for every app, ours included.

The apps, one by one
Taletune
You read a short passage aloud once, about a minute, and every story in the library can then play in your voice. Up to five family members can each make a voice profile, so a child can pick whether Mum, Dad or a grandparent reads tonight. Alongside the library of illustrated classics and original tales, the Personalized Story Creator writes a story around your child, with their name, their toys and the people they love. Narration covers 15 languages in 25 voices, because accents are kept separate: four Englishes, Mexican Spanish, Canadian French and four Arabic dialects among them. You can delete the recording and the voice model made from it at any time in the app.
Bedtime Whisper
An iPhone, iPad and Apple-silicon Mac app that needs version 26 of the operating system, so it will not run on older devices or on Android. You record 5 to 60 seconds of speech or import an audio file — or skip cloning and describe a narrator in words. Stories can come from its classic library, be written by AI, or be your own text and artwork. It adds read-along word highlighting, a sleep mode with a timer and offline playback after the first listen. Its privacy policy names the outside services used for transcription and says you can delete a cloned voice at any time in the app.
Voice Hug
Voice Hug writes a new story from keywords you pick, in short, medium or long versions of about 2, 5 or 10 minutes, and saves it to your library. Without Premium it reads with a stock narrator; reading in your own voice needs Premium and about a two-minute recording. There is also a text-only mode for parents who would rather read aloud themselves. Its website says voice samples are encrypted, never used to train shared models, and can be deleted at any time.
DreamStories
DreamStories generates illustrated five-page stories and six-episode mini-series, narrated by AI voices or, on Premium, by a clone of your voice made from about 60 seconds of speech. Premium Plus lets you invite grandparents to add their voices. After the story it can play sleep music on a 10, 30 or 60-minute timer, and it includes a bedtime-routine checklist. Its own FAQ says the current version does not work offline.
SleepyVoice
SleepyVoice clones a voice from a few seconds of audio and also offers a large catalogue of stock voices, with AI-written illustrated stories in what it lists as 40+ languages. Its listing says the original recording is deleted as soon as the voice model has been made. It is sold through story packs as well as monthly and yearly plans.
MamaTales
MamaTales narrates a fixed library of more than 300 classic fairy tales in a voice cloned from a few sentences of recording. It is iOS only and paid for with points packs rather than a subscription. Its privacy policy says voice samples are used only to build your voice model and that you can ask for them to be deleted.
Mama's Voice
Mama's Voice works in a web browser rather than as an app. The free tier makes one personalised story a day in a preset voice, with no sign-up. Paid plans add up to three cloned family voices and four child profiles, with stories of 3, 5 or 8 minutes in 14 languages. It says voiceprints are encrypted and can be deleted in one tap, and that it never collects a child's voice. An unrelated reading app on Google Play uses the same name.
Story Time AI
Listed on Google Play as "Bedtime Stories: Story Time AI", this Android-only app pairs cloned-voice narration with an AI story writer, stories shared by other parents, and a scanner that reads the pages of your own paper books aloud, plus flashcards and quizzes.
Not available yet, or no longer updated
Dreamloo describes cloned-voice stories from 30 seconds of audio, but it is an iOS waitlist with no app in either store yet. Fabler, one of the earliest apps in this category, has not been updated on the App Store since January 2025.
If you would rather not clone a voice
Cloning is not the only way to be at bedtime from a distance.
Caribu by Mattel is a video call built around a shared picture book: you and your child turn the same pages of a library of thousands of licensed books together, live. It runs on iOS, Android and the web, with a free plan and an Unlimited plan at $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year. It is the closest thing to really being there — but both of you have to be free at the same moment, which is exactly what travel and time zones make hard.
Readmio is for the nights you are in the room. You read aloud from its library and the app listens, adding sound effects and music at the right moment; you can also record your own reading to play back later. It says speech recognition runs entirely on your device and no recordings leave it. A starter set of stories is free, then it is a subscription.
Recording yourself with any voice memo app costs nothing and works for a few favourites. Its limit is that you have one recording of each book, and the night your child wants a different one, you are back to square one.
How to choose
- Start with your phone. Bedtime Whisper needs iOS 26, MamaTales is iOS only, Story Time AI is Android only, and Mama's Voice runs in a browser. Taletune, Voice Hug, DreamStories and SleepyVoice cover both iOS and Android.
- Library or new stories every night. Small children love hearing the same story again and again, so a library of classics matters more than it sounds. Generators give you something new each time. Taletune and Bedtime Whisper do both.
- Language and accent, not just language. If your family speaks Egyptian Arabic, Mexican Spanish or Canadian French, check for the accent itself. We wrote about why that matters on our languages page.
- Who else will read. If grandparents will record too, check how many voices a plan allows. Our piece on long-distance grandparents covers that setup.
- What happens to the recording. Ask where it goes, whether you can delete it and the voice model made from it, and whether it trains anything. We set out those questions in is AI voice cloning safe for kids?
- How you pay. Monthly, yearly, weekly and points-based plans are hard to compare at a glance; work out the cost per month before you subscribe.
Whichever app you choose, the recording decides the result more than the software does. How to record a voice sample that sounds like you applies to all of them.
Where Taletune fits
Taletune's strengths are the range of languages and accents, five family voices, a library and a story creator in one app, and both iOS and Android. If you want sleep music and a timer built in after the story, Bedtime Whisper and DreamStories offer that. If you want to read live yourself with sound effects, Readmio does it well. If you have no smartphone to hand, Mama's Voice runs in a browser.
Checked against each app's own website, store listing and privacy policy on 18 October 2026. Several of these apps launched this year and change quickly, so check the listing before you pay. Taletune is free on iOS and Android.
